I was met at the train station by owner/manager Rachel who I immediately liked. She whisked me through the small town of Ventimiglia and up a winding, scenic road that would lead to where I would spend the next five days. During the short trip Rachel explained the history behind Pigna and told me where I could find the most interesting places to visit during my stay. At some point I looked up to see a picturesque view.
Perched on the top of a mountain was a magnificent tower and city still standing proudly from the 15th century.
The day I arrived was gloriously warm for a late October day and the sun revealed the stone and architecture reminiscent of ancient towns like these that are scattered around Italy.
The homes and stores are built in the side of the mountains with a stacking effect. I often thought of Medici: Masters of Florence.
After parking the car Rachel guided me up stone stairs, through brick archways, and down a cobblestone walk to a door seemingly carved from primeval stone.
I gasped as she opened the door to the townhouse. The inside was breathtaking. The house has all the modern amenities that one would need for an extended vacation while still keeping the integrity of the ancient era.
The main bedroom and bathroom is on the main floor. The lush king bed with it’s 1000 count cotton bedding was hard to get out of each morning.
The bedroom was slightly trumped by the exquisite bathroom equipped with a spa tub that was perfect for soaking away the day’s activities in. There’s an ample shower with rain shower head and it even has a vanity mirror with lighting included.
There’s a wonderful living room on the second floor complete with a comfortable couch and large HD television. Guests are free to enjoy the BlueRay/DVD player and various movies.
The third floor is where the second and third bedrooms are found and the huge kitchen with everything one might need to cook a complete meal. Rachel has even made sure that a clothes washer and dishwasher are included to make the house complete.
During my stay I considered tucking myself away in all the comfort but my curiosity of the little town called so I ventured out to take a look.
Within a 3 minute walk there is a little market with fresh foods, breads, and drinks, three restaurants, and two cafes, one with amazing cappuccinos that are a must! (for more photos click here)
Short walks and hikes will take you to several must see attractions with breathtaking views of the whole little town. I spent the days meandering down trails and through cobblestone streets.
There’s no shortage of things to do in Pigna and I would highly recommend this Luxury Among Medieval – Liguria Holiday Homes A Unique Treasure to anyone.
It’s a perfect place for a honeymoon, long weekend, extended family vacation, or girl’s getaway. I visited as a solo traveler and found it exhilarating.
