The name Mekong means “mother of waters”, a name of actual significance for the people who survive at the water’s edge in Cambodia. Their lives rotate around agriculture and fishing and to them the river is literally life and death. The Mekong River is home for thousands in Cambodia and is their only means of employment and source of food.
The Mekong River is one of the world’s 10 longest rivers. It originates in the mountains of Tibet, and follows a constant flow across Myanmar and Laos. It makes its way through Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam then reaches its end at the South China Sea, a journey of 2,702 miles (4,350km). Over fifty-five million people depend on the river for food, housing, and employment.
