During my latest travels through Indonesia it was suggested that I try a mountain retreat located in Ungaran. I’m a beach and sand girl first and foremost so I rarely travel to higher altitudes unless something really intrigues me. After doing a bit of research, I was interested enough to want to give this resort a try.

Balemong Resort is located in the small town of Ungaran, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia about 35 km (22 miles) from Semarang, the capitol of Central Java. It can be reached by air from various cities and Garuda Indonesia offers several flights daily. The resort sits adjacent to rich, green rice paddies that are nestled at the base of the Ungaran Mountains. The owner of this exclusive resort hails from a background of Chinese and Dutch, which resonates throughout the resort’s charming décor and landscaping.

Upon my arrival I was guided to a covered seating area where I enjoyed pastries and the best cinnamon tea I’ve ever tasted! As I relaxed, the hotel staff checked me in and sent my luggage to my room. Another member explained the grounds and activities that were offered and I was touched at how eager he was for me to explore. Each staff member at the Balemong is attentive and service oriented and I was impressed at how quickly they responded to my requests.

Balemong boasts three types of rooms, suites and traditional Javanese villas and is perfect for couples, families, and honeymooners. Called Joglo Solo, these distinctive traditional villas vary in size and can accommodate small and large groups. I stayed in one of their deluxe rooms and was pleased with its cleanliness and efficiency. The view from my room was what stood out for me the most. It overlooked the rice paddies and the backdrop of the mountains made for a breathtaking sunset and sunrise!

Surrounded by wonderful architecture, the open-aired restaurant serves traditional as well as international cuisine. After settling in my room I enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The chef prepared a pleasant mixed selection that was served family style. Afterward, I wandered around the unique floor plan with its many twists and turns, archways, and sitting gardens. Each corner of this distinctive resort is rich with culture and traditional art and woodwork making it a great place to explore!

The grounds of the Balemong are absolutely majestic. The detail and care that goes into the landscaping is evident in the rich colors of the flora and fauna and I very much enjoyed wandering around. Every corner I turned offered another beautiful enclave to sit and enjoy nature making the surroundings a photographer’s dream.

The pool area stunned me; it is larger than I had anticipated and surrounded by traditional villas and artwork. It’s perfect for families as they have a small children’s pool that’s immaculately cared for.
