Starting your own business can be terrifying. Here are some tips for staying confident and motivated as a new entrepreneur.

10 Tips For Staying Confident and Motivated

The fear of the unknown can cripple your confidence and dampen your motivation. That little voice in your head is constantly whispering in your ear, “What the hell are you doing? What if you fail? What if you lose everything? What will people think?

When I started all over I was 50…yes, at 50 years old I faced a devastating life change that left me essentially homeless and jobless. I was terrified.

After the shock of it all, I was faced with trying to enter back into the corporate world or create my own destiny.

I decided to make my own way. I’ve always worked freelance but for other people so I decided that I was going to be in charge of my own fate, who I worked with, where I worked and what I charged.

These are the tips that I found that work best for me for staying confident and motivated while your building your own business.

10 Tips For Staying Confident and Motivated

1. Own Your Decision

Once you decide you are going to start your own business it’s likely that there will come a time that you think to yourself, “Oh God, this is a bad idea!”

Try to think back at other good decisions that you’ve made realize that you probably thought the same way about them as well.

But look, they turned out great and this one will too. Realize that the Universe supports you and it is your divine right to succeed!

Honestly, we often don’t know what the best way for us to achieve our desires are. Instead of getting discouraged and angry, make it your mission to go with the flow, take actionable steps forward each day toward your goals and believe that you will have all that you aspire to have.

When the uncertain times come around, and they will, just go with the flow and trust the Universe to know the how. You just wait for the when.

2. Outline your plans

Whenever you’re working toward a goal, it’s good to plot out several possible paths to get there. This way you know you’ll somehow reach your desired purpose.

Choose several possible outcomes; by having only one possible path toward a goal will leave you apprehensive. What if it doesn’t work?! Instead, imagine how confident you’d feel if you knew that you had also planned out several paths toward that one outcome of owning your own business?

3. Push past self-limiting beliefs

Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, our passion and natural predispositions to dream big are suppressed. Parents, teachers, and peer pressure start forcing their own beliefs on us. They make us think that they know what we want, can and can’t do in life, and what’s best for us.

Find your limits by revealing yourself to different situations and moving past the uncomfortable feelings that will surely come up. Once you have confidence in yourself, you’ll be amazed what you can accomplish.

4. Think Positively To Overpower Your Negative Self-Perception

Humans have a natural negative self-perception. In pre-historic days that kept us safe from being killed or eaten by predators. But now we know that not every new or different situation is going to kill us.

Our negative self-perception can carve away at our confidence because of the hardwired way we are designed to pay attention to all that we’ve done wrong.

When you find yourself with these negative perceptions come up with five positive thoughts to dispute every one negative thought.

Before moving from one positive thought to the other stay with it for 30 seconds, really thinking about it.

Acknowledge your emotions, both good and bad.

For every bad thought, ask, “Is this true?”

Never suppress negative thoughts, it’s important to understand them.

After acknowledging your bad emotions, move on from them. Don’t overthink them or dissect them. Doing this makes them more powerful!

5. Start with gratitude

This is a big one for me and it should be for everyone…start each day by thinking of everything you can be grateful for now. By being grateful for what is good in your life (even a great cup of coffee) you will put yourself in the right mindset to receive more good things.

6. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

It’s funny but true…if we step outside of our comfort zone regularly, they expand. If we stay within them, they shrink. Do what you can to avoid getting trapped inside a shrinking comfort zone by pushing yourself to do things that take you out of it.

We’ve all had experiences where we’ve done something that scared the crap out of us, and then realized it wasn’t so bad.

You won’t always have someone standing by to kick you out of your comfort zones, so you have to take action and knock yourself over the edge!

7. Bounce Back

It’s not failure that devastates our confidence, it’s not getting back up after the fall. Often, people with the greatest success have had the biggest failures. Think of Milton Hershey, Henry Ford, and Walt Disney all of them failed hard before becoming wildly successful!

8. Breathe!

Breath…seriously…BREATHE. Breathing heavily floods your brain with oxygen and makes you more awake and aware. It’s important in a stressed situation because it’ll make you realize that you can control your body, and not your unconscious mind. If you’re not practicing breathing, you definitely should be.

9. Talk To Yourself

You might think this is crazy, but believe me, it works. Talking to yourself can make you smarter, improve your memory, help you focus and even increase athletic performance. The documentary The Human Brain claims we say between 300 to 1,000 words to ourselves per minute.

Pay attention to what you’re saying to yourself. Be positive, because the way you talk to yourself affects your neurobiological to yourself.

When you say, “I know what I’m doing” or see things as a challenge rather than a problem, you’ve turned your reaction into a positive one.

10. Face Your Fears

When you feel in control, you won’t be afraid. When you comfortable with something, it doesn’t seem so scary.

When you feel out of control, you don’t think clearly. Your emotional brain takes charge. This is why fear often seems irrational because your emotions are in control.

Harvard Medical School professor Ronald Siegel recommends this in his book, The Mindfulness Solution:

Think about your worst fear. Spend time with it. Now make your fear worse by getting closer to it. Imagine the worst that could happen. Now focus on your breathing. Feel your body relax. See, you didn’t die, did you? You’re on your way to conquering your fear.

The bottom line is that, if you don’t believe in yourself no one else will. So start now, start today; KNOW that you can do anything you set your mind on!
